King Frederik and Queen Mary are embarking on their very first major tour since ascending to the throne. The Danish royals have announced their upcoming visits to Sweden and Norway, where they will reunite with their close friends and fellow monarchs. This exciting tour will not only strengthen diplomatic ties but also reaffirm their longstanding friendships.
From 6 to 7 May, King Frederik, 55, and Queen Mary, 52, will embark on a state visit to Sweden, a country they share a remarkable bond with. During their visit, they will have the privilege of meeting King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, and undoubtedly Crown Princess Victoria. The Danish royals and Crown Princess Victoria have nurtured their friendship over the years, with Victoria even serving as the godmother to King Frederik and Queen Mary’s eldest child, Crown Prince Christian. In return, Queen Mary is honored to be the godmother of Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel’s firstborn, Princess Estelle. The connections between these royal families continue to deepen with King Frederik being named a godfather to Victoria and Daniel’s youngest child, Prince Oscar.
Following their visit to Sweden, King Frederik and Queen Mary will embark on a state visit to Norway from 14 to 15 May. This visit will provide a heartwarming reunion with King Harald V and Queen Sonja, as well as strengthening the bond between the Danish and Norwegian royals. Crown Prince Haakon, Norway’s future king, shares a close friendship with King Frederik and Queen Mary, further cemented by the fact that Frederik served as Haakon’s best man during his wedding to Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby in 2001. Furthermore, Crown Prince Haakon is also one of the godparents to Crown Prince Christian, a testament to the deep friendship shared by these families.
In addition to their visits to Sweden and Norway, King Frederik and Queen Mary will also be embarking on an adventure to the Faroe Islands in mid-June and Greenland in late June and early July. Accompanied by the Royal Ship Dannebrog, the Danish royals will explore these beautiful territories that are part of the Kingdom of Denmark. This journey will not only provide an opportunity for cultural exchange but also showcase the unity and diversity within the kingdom.
King Frederik’s ascent to the throne on 14 January marked a new era for Denmark, following the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe. Since then, the royal couple has wasted no time in fulfilling their royal duties, with King Frederik even carrying out his first solo trip outside Denmark to Poland. This trip was particularly special as Crown Prince Christian, at the age of 18, was appointed regent for the first time, showcasing the next generation’s involvement in the monarchy. Queen Mary, on the other hand, has been engaging in her own royal activities, such as attending the Men’s EHF Euro 2024 final in Cologne, Germany, last month.
As King Frederik and Queen Mary embark on their first major tour, their reign begins with excitement, diplomacy, and reunions with their close friends from neighboring nations. This tour reflects not only the strength of their friendships but also the commitment they hold to their roles as ambassadors of the Danish kingdom. With each visit, they aim to foster stronger connections, creating a legacy that will undoubtedly continue for years to come. May this royal tour be a memorable and successful one for King Frederik and Queen Mary as they navigate their reign with grace, dedication, and a commitment to serving their people.
