Eric Dane Opens Up About Being Fired from “Grey’s Anatomy”

Eric Dane recently revealed on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast that he believes he was fired from “Grey’s Anatomy” after portraying Dr. Mark Sloan for six seasons. While acknowledging his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction during his time on the show, Dane clarified that his departure was not solely due to his personal issues. Rather, he stated that he was starting to become too expensive for the network, as many actors in long-running series tend to do. Despite this, Dane expressed understanding and gratitude towards the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, for her support throughout the ordeal.

Character Demise and Guest Appearance

Dane’s character met an unfortunate end as a result of a plane crash in the Season 8 finale of the show. Although he initially survived the crash, his character ultimately passed away at the beginning of Season 9. However, Dane did make a return for a guest appearance in Season 17, appearing alongside Chyler Leigh, who portrayed his on-screen love interest, Lexie Grey. The tragic fate of their characters in the crash marked a significant moment in the series.

The actor also shared details about his battle with addiction, mentioning that he had been sober for “three or four years” before relapsing during the 2007 Writers Guild of America Strike. Dane reflected on the impact of his struggles with substance abuse during his time on “Grey’s Anatomy,” noting that he spent more time feeling “f-ed up” than he did being sober. This period of turmoil coincided with his departure from the show, highlighting the challenges he faced both personally and professionally.

Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit from “Grey’s Anatomy,” Eric Dane expressed appreciation for the opportunities and support he received during his time on the show. He commended Shonda Rhimes for her unwavering protection and acknowledged that, while he may have been fired in the end, he had fond memories of his experience working on the series. Dane’s candid reflections shed light on the complexities of being a part of a long-running and beloved television show, offering insight into the highs and lows of his journey as an actor.
