Prince Harry’s recent return to London was highly anticipated, as he attended a service at St Paul’s Cathedral to mark the tenth anniversary of the Invictus Games. However, his visit to the city was brief, as he departed just hours after the service to join his wife Meghan on their trip to Nigeria. The couple was invited by the Chief of Defence Staff, the highest-ranking military official in the country, whom Harry had met at the Invictus Games in Dusseldorf the previous September.
David Wiseman, a friend of Harry’s and Director at the Invictus Games Foundation, spoke about the importance of the couple’s visit to Nigeria. He mentioned that they were going to see the progress being made in establishing and developing sports recovery in the nation. He highlighted the incredible progress that had been achieved and the celebration of these advancements. Last year, Meghan had spent time bonding with the Nigerian team during the Invictus Games, and they even gave her a Nigerian name. This connection held special significance for Meghan, as she revealed her Nigerian heritage on her former podcast, Archetypes.
In a candid conversation with celebrity interviewer Ziwe, Meghan disclosed that she had discovered her Nigerian heritage after having her genealogy done a few years ago. She expressed her excitement about exploring her roots further and mentioned the enthusiastic reactions she received, especially from Nigerian women, upon learning about her heritage.
The possibility of Meghan returning to the UK in the near future seems unlikely, as discussed by The Telegraph’s Royal Editor Hannah Furness on HELLO!’s A Right Royal Podcast. There is a prevailing narrative that Meghan and the children will not come back until certain security concerns are addressed to their satisfaction. However, Harry is expected to make regular visits to the UK.
The service at St Paul’s Cathedral was led by The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, with representatives from various nations that participated in the Invictus Games in attendance. Actor Damian Lewis also made an appearance and recited the poem ‘Invictus’ by William Ernest Henley. The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry, aim to assist in the rehabilitation of injured and sick military personnel and veterans globally by providing them with the challenge of competing in sporting events similar to the Paralympics.
Wednesday’s event marked Prince Harry’s return to the UK for the first time since visiting his father, King Charles, following his cancer diagnosis in February. Upon his arrival, Harry went straight to Clarence House, where he spent 45 minutes with his father before the latter continued his journey to Sandringham.
Prince Harry’s recent trip to London and subsequent visit to Nigeria carried significant importance. The couple’s engagement with the Nigerian community and their ongoing dedication to supporting injured and sick military personnel and veterans through the Invictus Games exemplifies their commitment to making a positive impact on society.
