At the 2024 ESPYs, tennis champion Serena Williams didn’t hold back when it came to roasting Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce. During her opening monologue at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Williams congratulated the Chiefs on their success, but then took a dig at Kelce by mentioning his Super Bowl win alongside Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, Patrick Mahomes. She playfully joked about the couple allegedly spending $100,000 a day on their romance, comparing it to the extravagant amount Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown spends on his beard.
Despite Williams’ humorous jabs, both Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift were noticeably absent from the event. While Swift was busy preparing for her upcoming concert in Milan, Kelce was participating in a karaoke competition at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship Tournament in South Lake Tahoe, where he won after performing a song by Whitesnakes and giving a shout-out to Swift.
Among the attendees at the 2024 ESPYs were Williams’ close friend Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, who received the prestigious Pat Tillman Award For Service. Williams didn’t just target Kelce in her monologue, she also took a playful swipe at LeBron James, referencing his son Bronny’s draft to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Stepping outside the sports world briefly, Williams also threw a diss at rapper Drake during her monologue. Referencing Drake’s feud with Kendrick Lamar, she warned against picking a fight with the rapper, suggesting that he may alienate his Canadian hometown. The playful jab at Drake’s potential reception at a Raptors game added a humorous touch to Williams’ monologue.
