The Watermill Center’s Unconventional Artistic Showcase

The Watermill Center’s annual summer benefit certainly did not disappoint when it came to pushing the boundaries of high-end art. With a guest list that included Solange Knowles, architect Peter Marino, and fashion designer Maxwell Osborne, attendees were treated to a truly unique experience filled with performance art that was anything but traditional.

The theme for this year’s event was “A Laboratory: 100 Years of Experimentation,” paying homage to the history of the Hamptons art center. The sprawling 10-acre wooded property was transformed into a playground of creativity, with 20 site-specific performances and installations for guests to explore.

From a man running on a treadmill in front of a block of ice to performers crawling over sharp seashells and concrete balls, the evening was filled with unexpected and thought-provoking displays of artistic expression. One artist stood holding a fake pig, while another artist vape and drank a martini while wearing ears and a snout. Each performance challenged the norms of traditional art, inviting guests to engage with the work in a truly immersive way.

In addition to the avant-garde performances, the event also honored famed choreographer Lucinda Childs, whose groundbreaking work was presented throughout the evening. Guests were treated to a performance by rapper and performance artist Mykki Blanco, adding another layer of creativity to the already eclectic showcase.

The Watermill Center’s summer benefit not only lived up to its reputation but exceeded expectations in showcasing edgy and high-end art. From the diverse range of performances to the immersive installations, guests were transported into a world of experimental artistry that challenged the norms of traditional art. This event truly solidified the Watermill Center as a hub for unconventional and boundary-pushing creativity in the heart of the Hamptons.
